Edna Mahan Correctional Facility Investigated for Sexual Violence

Sixty percent of all sexual violence against inmates is perpetrated by jail or prison staff and more than 50 percent of the sexual contact between inmate and staff member—all of which is illegal—is nonconsensual, according to the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Statistics, Sexual Victimization in Prisons and Jails Reported by Inmates, 2011-2012 (2013).

Perhaps that’s why it’s not a surprise that the Justice Department and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey recently released a report citing the Edna Mahan correctional facility for violations involving the constitutional rights of prisoners in its care, “resulting in serious harm and the substantial risk of serious harm.” Specifically, the report says Edna Mahan failed to protect women prisoners from harm due to sexual abuse by staff, violating the women’s eighth amendment rights.
